Teaching Artist (Part-Time)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Teaching Artists (TAs) are the foundation of BHAC's restorative workforce development model, grounded in our Restorative Cultural Arts™ Praxis. They guide youth in developing artistic, creative, and professional practices through projects that emphasize discipline, teamwork, and self-expression. Teaching Artists work closely with BHAC staff to document student participation, track deliverables, and ensure that project goals are met on time and with care. This is an in-person position that requires consistent attendance at designated sites.

Above all, Teaching Artists serve as role models and mentors for young people, embodying the values outlined in Don Miguel Ruiz's The Four Agreements:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Instruction & Facilitation

  • Design and facilitate engaging, hands-on workshops in the arts for system-impacted youth within probation camps and halls, applying BHAC's Restorative Cultural Arts™ Praxis to foster healing, accountability, and self-discovery through the creative process.

  • Provide constructive feedback, encourage creative problem-solving, and maintain a safe and respectful classroom environment.

  • Model professionalism, reliability, and positive communication at all times.

Planning & Documentation

  • Develop lesson plans, project outlines, and supply lists tailored to program sites and learning goals.

  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, deliverables, and participant progress.

  • Upload required documentation (e.g., sign-in sheets, verification forms, student work) on time.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with Program Associates, site staff, and other Teaching Artists to align on curriculum themes, project outcomes, and schedules.

  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as assigned.

  • Support BHAC's trauma-informed, healing-centered approach to engaging youth participants.


Qualifications

  • Proficiency in at least one art form, such as visual, media, or performance arts.

  • Experience working with youth, particularly in justice-impacted or high-trauma environments.

  • Familiarity with restorative and trauma-informed pedagogies.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in dynamic, high-need environments.

  • Willingness and ability to work in person at assigned camps and halls.

  • Valid Department of Probation Live Scan clearance (if over 21) and any site-specific clearances required.


Administrative and Physical Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work evenings or weekends as required.

  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 10 pounds.

  • Ability to remain seated or stand for extended periods and to travel between multiple worksites.

  • Operate computers, recording devices, and art-related equipment as part of instruction or documentation.
